We Can Get Them For You Wholesale
The special offer...
This short goes way back. Way way back. Or at least feels very way back to me. How it goes is back at university I was hooked on the works of Neil Gaiman (still am to this day) and one of his short stories from the collection Smoke and Mirrors always stuck to me as something of a pretty awesome idea (bargain hunting with contract killers) that seemed pretty filmable. This isn't something of a revelation though, as plenty of others have had the same idea and the man himself even went out of his way to point out that its a popular one that people liked to adapt for school projects. Well lo and behold, being a brainless student drone, I couldn't come up with an actual decent idea to save my soul and so with a little letter writing, I had the great honor to have a go at making a short film version myself.
Keeping the Gurrilla way of it all, I shot all of this by myself, with some help from my good friend and my flatmate at the time, over the course of several weekends of filming and a week of sleepless editing, put this together. It did well, getting nominated at the university's student fest for 'best film' and 'director', but more happy my friend Sash picked up a 'best actor'. We were quite proud as students of that.
Nowadays, I can't watch it again. Lots of films I've worked on, I can't watch again, and this is one of the top of them. Not that I think that it's bad (I still really dig the lighting I somehow scraped together) but only five years and it feels like a relic. Note the scene transitions are a rip from an anime series I was also heavily watching at the time and I'm pretty sure there's a camera sitting open and obvious in the background for a couple of shots. Student film awesomeness.
The Film Itself...
Be online one day when I force myself to sit through and check it uploads right. Could be a while...
